Skilled professionals with a confirmed job offer from a designated Australian employer can apply for a sponsored work visa with a clear pathway to permanent residency.
Not sure which subclass fits your profile? Here is a quick breakdown of the three main skilled migration visas:
No job offer needed. No state nomination needed. This is a points-only visa for skilled workers whose occupation is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). You apply based purely on your points score – making it the most competitive but also the most flexible pathway.
This visa requires a nomination from an Australian state or territory government. In return, the nomination adds 5 points to your score. You must commit to living and working in the nominating state for at least 2 years. Popular among Delhi applicants targeting states with strong demand for their occupation.
A temporary visa (5 years) that leads to permanent residency. Requires nomination from a state/territory or sponsorship from an eligible relative living in a designated regional area. The nomination adds 15 points – making it an excellent option for candidates who fall just short of Subclass 189 or 190 cut-offs.

The short answer is 6.0 in each band - that’s what’s called Competent English & it’s the bare minimum for skilled visas like Subclass 189, 190 & 491.
But here’s what most people don’t realise until it’s too late: Competent English only gives you 0 points. To actually see a difference in your invitation chances, you want Proficient English (7.0 each band = 10 points) or Superior English (8.0 each band = 20 points). We’ve seen clients miss an invitation by 5 points - points they could’ve earned with one better IELTS attempt. Whether it’s worth retaking depends on your full profile & that’s something we assess individually.
Technically, 65 points is enough to submit an EOI. Practically, it’s rarely enough to get an invitation.
The cutoffs vary by occupation. IT and engineering occupations have been inviting candidates in the 75–85 range. Accounting - one of the most competitive fields - regularly sees cutoffs of 90–95 or more. These numbers shift every invitation round, which is why we track them closely and give you a realistic target based on your specific occupation, not a generic estimate.
Most of our clients complete the full journey - from skill assessment to visa grant - for Subclass 189 and 190 & for Subclass 491.
Roughly how it breaks down: skill assessment takes 2–4 months, the wait for an invitation after EOI is anywhere from 1–6 months (heavily dependent on your occupation and points) & visa processing takes another 3–6 months. That said, every case is different. We give you a personalised timeline in your first consultation - not a number pulled from a brochure.
Yes & it often makes strategic sense. Your partner’s English score, age & qualifications can add points to your application. Dependent children under 23 can be included as secondary applicants.
We look at your family as a whole unit, not just the primary applicant, to make sure you’re not leaving points on the table.
You need to be under 45 at the time of invitation. Points for age are highest between 25–32 (30 points) and taper off after that.
If you’re in your early 40s and worried - don’t write yourself off. Age points lost can often be offset through a stronger English score, state nomination, or your partner’s contribution to the application. We’ve helped clients in this situation find a realistic path forward. Book a consultation and we’ll tell you honestly what’s possible.
No - and this surprises a lot of people. Subclass 189 and 190 are purely points-based. Your skills, qualifications & experience are what matter, not an employer’s letter.
Subclass 494 does require employer sponsorship, but that’s a completely separate pathway. The majority of Indian clients we work with get their PR without ever having worked in Australia.
Which one is right for you depends on your occupation, points & how quickly you want to move. We map this out clearly in your first consultation.
Yes, self-lodgement is legally allowed. But consider what’s at stake: if you pick the wrong ANZSCO occupation code, miscalculate your work experience, or submit incomplete documents, your application can be refused - and the AUD 4,640 visa fee is non-refundable.
The process isn’t just paperwork. It involves choosing the right assessing authority, optimising your EOI for competitive invitation rounds & building a legally sound application. A MARA-registered agent doesn’t just help you fill forms - they protect your investment.
It depends entirely on your occupation:
Each authority has different requirements, timelines & ways they assess your credentials. Choosing the wrong one - or applying incorrectly - costs you months. We handle the entire skill assessment process to make sure it’s done right the first time.
