What is the Parents & Grandparents Program (PGP)?
The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is a family sponsorship initiative introduced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency (PR) in Canada.
This program reflects Canada’s strong commitment to family reunification, enabling families to live together with long-term stability and full access to Canadian benefits. Once approved, sponsored individuals receive permanent resident status, which may eventually lead to Canadian citizenship.

Eligibility Criteria for Sponsors
To qualify as a sponsor under the PGP, you must meet the following requirements as set out by IRCC. All conditions must be satisfied at the time of application submission.
Received an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
You must have been selected through the random draw and received an official ITA from IRCC.
Age — 18 Years or Older
The sponsor must be at least 18 years of age at the time of submitting the sponsorship application to IRCC.
Residing in Canada
The sponsor must be residing in Canada throughout the application process and must intend to live in Canada.
Canadian Citizen, PR, or Registered Under Indian Act
ncludes Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or individuals registered under the Canadian Indian Act.
Meet Minimum Necessary Income (MNI)
Demonstrate sufficient income based on family size. Income proof from last 3 taxation years (NOA) required.
Sign a Legally Binding Financial Undertaking
Agree to financially support parents/grandparents for 20 years (10 years in Quebec).

How to Apply for a Canada Visitor Visa from India
The Canada Visitor Visa application process is primarily online via the official IRCC portal. Follow all 9 steps precisely — accuracy and completeness directly determine your approval outcome. Apply at least 6–8 weeks before your intended travel date.
Submit Interest to Sponsor Form
Apply online during the IRCC intake period (announced publicly). This form registers your intent to sponsor. No supporting documents are required at this stage — only your basic information.
Random Selection (Lottery Draw)
Applications are selected through a random lottery system. There is no ranking based on points, income, or priority. Selection is purely random among all eligible registrants who submitted during the intake window.
Receive Invitation to Apply (ITA)
Only selected applicants receive an official Invitation to Apply from IRCC. You cannot submit a sponsorship application without receiving this ITA. Check your IRCC account and email regularly during the draw period.
Submit Complete Sponsorship Application
Submit your full application within the deadline in your ITA (usually 90 days). Include all forms, supporting documents for both sponsor and sponsored persons, and the applicable government fees.
Application Review by IRCC
IRCC evaluates your application for eligibility, financial capability, relationship proof, and documentation accuracy. Officers may request additional documents or clarifications during this stage.
Medical Examinations & Security Checks
Sponsored parents and grandparents must complete medical examinations with IRCC-approved panel physicians and provide police clearance certificates from all relevant countries of residence.
Final Approval & PR Status Granted
Upon successful completion of all checks, IRCC issues a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and, where applicable, a permanent resident visa allowing entry to Canada.
Arrival in Canada
Your parents or grandparents land in Canada and officially become permanent residents. They can now live, access healthcare, and eventually work (if eligible) in Canada — permanently, alongside your family.
