If you’re planning to work or study in the UK, this is big news. The UK Government just announced some major immigration changes in its Autumn Budget 2026 – and honestly, it’s good news for both skilled workers and international students.
At Hodophiles Xplore Visas, recognised as one of the best immigration consultants in Delhi, we’re breaking this down in the simplest way possible so you know exactly what’s changing and what it means for you.

Let’s get into it.
Change 1: Sponsored Workers Get Up to 6 Months to Find a New Job
Right now, if your UK employer ends your sponsorship, you only get 60 days to find a new job or leave the country. That’s barely enough time.
Under the new proposed change:
- Highly skilled sponsored workers could get up to 6 months to find a new employer
- The duration depends on how long you worked in your previous highly paid job
- The longer your experience, the more time you may get
Important: This is not for every Skilled Worker visa holder. It applies to the highest-skilled workers only. Exact eligibility criteria are yet to be published.
This is still a massive improvement. 60 days was stressful and unrealistic. 6 months gives people a real chance to find the right opportunity without panicking.
Change 2: 2-Year Graduate Visa is Coming Back – But With a Condition
This one is huge for students.
Earlier it was announced that from January 1, 2027, the UK Graduate visa would be reduced from 2 years to just 18 months. Many Indian students were disappointed by this.
Now, the UK Government has reversed this – but only partially:
- Graduates from high-compliance universities with strong employment outcomes → 2 years Graduate visa
- Graduates from other universities → 18 months (as previously announced)
So the university you choose now directly impacts how long you can stay and work in the UK after graduation. This makes university selection even more critical than before.
As one of the best immigration consultants in Delhi for UK Study Visa, we always advise our clients to think beyond just admission – the university’s compliance record and graduate employment outcomes now matter just as much as its academic ranking.
The catch: The list of qualifying universities hasn’t been published yet. We’re waiting for official Home Office guidance.
Change 3: Skilled Worker Salary Thresholds Are Being Updated
From Spring 2027, the UK is also changing salary requirements for Skilled Worker visas:
- Occupation-specific minimum salary dropping from median wage to 25th percentile – this could make more jobs eligible
- General salary threshold will be updated using new wage data
- Annual salary threshold adjustments introduced going forward
- PhD salary discount is being removed
This could open doors for more occupations and roles that previously didn’t meet the salary bar.
Change 4: High Potential Individual Visa Expanded
Previously, the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa was only for graduates of the world’s top 80 universities.
Now it’s being expanded to the top 150 universities globally – which means more international graduates will qualify for this route without needing a job offer.
What Does This Mean for Indian Students and Professionals?
If you’re a student planning to study in the UK:
- Your university choice now matters more than ever
- Choosing a high-compliance university could mean the difference between 18 months and 2 years of post-study work
- Wait for the official list of qualifying universities before finalising your application
If you’re a skilled professional on a UK work visa:
- The 6-month job search window is a relief – but eligibility criteria are still awaited
- Don’t assume it applies to you automatically
- Keep an eye on Home Office updates in 2027
If you’re considering the HPI visa:
- Check if your university falls in the new top 150 list
- This visa doesn’t need employer sponsorship – a great option for recent graduates
One Important Reminder
These are Budget announcements – not live immigration rules yet. Full Home Office guidance and implementation details are still awaited. The 6-month curtailment change is planned for 2027.
