Australia Expands Biometric Collection to Visa Applicants in India
Effective 26 October 2026 | Important update for Indian applicants
Australia has extended its biometric collection programme to India. Applicants who lodge a new Australian visa application on or after 26 October 2026 may be asked to provide fingerprints and a facial image. Australia already collects biometrics in nearly 60 countries, and India is now being brought into line.
Who is affected?
New visa applications lodged in India on or after 26 October 2026. Applications submitted before this date, and visas already granted, are not affected. Not every applicant will be asked. Home Affairs decides case by case.
How will you be notified?
The Department of Home Affairs will tell you if biometrics are required and send instructions, typically by email to the applicant or their authorised agent.
How do you provide biometrics?
- In person: at one of 16 Australian Biometrics Collection Centres (ABCCs) across India, run by VFS Global. A service fee applies.
- Via the Australian Immi App: only for eligible applicants who have previously given biometrics at an ABCC and hold a valid passport. This option is free.
Will processing times be affected?
The Australian High Commission says processing times are not expected to be adversely affected, provided applicants complete the requirements promptly after being notified.
What should you do now?
- Do not book an appointment or use the app until you receive instructions.
- Check your email (including spam) regularly, and make sure your agent has your correct contact details.
- Book only through official channels, and be wary of anyone offering “priority” biometric slots.
What this means for you
Whether you’re applying for a skilled, student, visitor or other visa, build biometric steps into your timeline and respond quickly when notified.
