Canada continues to use its Express Entry system to select skilled workers for permanent residence, with recent draws highlighting the importance of occupational demand, Canadian work experience and provincial nominations.
In its latest draw held on 1 October 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued 3,500 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to candidates eligible under the Trades Occupations category. The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score was 476, making it the largest trades-specific Express Entry draw of 2026 so far.

What Do These Draws Mean for Skilled Workers?
- Trade professionals should assess category eligibility
The October 1 draw demonstrates that candidates who meet the requirements of a targeted occupational category may be considered through a category-based round. However, having experience in a trade-related occupation alone does not establish eligibility. Candidates must meet the applicable Express Entry and category-specific requirements.
- Canadian work experience remains relevant
The recent Canadian Experience Class draws issued 2,000 invitations each, with the CRS cut-off decreasing from 521 on September 1 to 518 on September 29. These rounds are specifically relevant to eligible candidates with qualifying Canadian work experience and should not be interpreted as direct benchmarks for applicants applying from overseas.
- Provincial nomination remains an important pathway
The September 28 PNP-specific draw issued 733 invitations at a CRS cut-off of 725. A provincial nomination generally adds 600 CRS points, which explains why PNP-specific cut-offs are typically much higher than those seen in other draw categories.
Applicants should assess individual provincial nomination programmes separately, as eligibility criteria, occupation priorities and selection procedures can differ by province.
- Overseas applicants need a broader immigration strategy
Candidates living outside Canada should not rely exclusively on the CRS cut-off of a single draw. Their options depend on their age, qualifications, language proficiency, skilled work experience, occupation, Express Entry eligibility and potential provincial nomination opportunities.
For some applicants, improving language scores or reviewing the eligibility of a spouse may strengthen their overall profile. Others may need to explore provincial pathways or alternative immigration options where appropriate.
Can You Apply for Canada PR With a Lower CRS Score?
A lower CRS score does not automatically make an applicant eligible for an invitation. The relevant question is whether the applicant qualifies for a particular immigration programme or category and how their profile ranks against other eligible candidates in that round.
Canada conducts general, programme-specific and category-based invitation rounds. Each round has its own eligibility conditions, invitation numbers and selection criteria. Future cut-offs cannot be guaranteed based on previous results.
