The Government of India has taken a significant step towards digital governance by launching the Electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) system on 30 June 2026. The initiative was officially launched by the Union Home Minister as part of the government’s efforts to modernize OCI services and improve accessibility for the Indian diaspora worldwide.
With the introduction of the e-OCI system, OCI cardholders can now generate and download a digital version of their OCI card through the official OCI Services Portal. The digital card can be stored on a mobile device and presented, where accepted, to immigration authorities and airlines, offering greater convenience while reducing reliance on physical documents. Existing physical OCI booklets remain valid.
The new system is expected to streamline OCI services, reduce paperwork, improve transparency, and provide a faster, more user-friendly experience for applicants and existing OCI cardholders.
