From 24 August 2026, New Zealand has introduced a new Trades & Technician Pathway under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC).
But having a trade job alone does NOT make you eligible.
Here’s what you need:
Your occupation must be on the eligible Trades & Technician occupation list
You need a Level 4 or higher relevant qualification
You must have at least 2.5 years of relevant post-qualification work experience
You also need 1.5 years of skilled work experience in New Zealand
That means 4 years of post-qualification experience in total, including the required New Zealand experience.
Your New Zealand employment must also meet the applicable SMC wage threshold.
So, a trade occupation by itself isn’t enough.
Before you assume you qualify, check your:
Occupation
Qualification
Work experience
New Zealand experience
Salary
The new pathway could create a residence opportunity for eligible trades and technicians but only if you meet ALL the requirements.
